Fayetteville Future Black History Makers: Zola Banks

Zola Banks, 10, daughter of Edward and Dorchele Banks, is in fourth grade at E. Melvin Honeycutt Elementary School.
She was nominated as a Fayetteville Observer Future Black History Maker because, “At just 10 years old, Zola has already demonstrated exceptional qualities that embody the spirit of Black excellence,” writes her mother, Dorchele Banks, who nominated her. “As a talented young dancer, Zola has showcased her passion for the arts, mastering various styles and performing in numerous community events. Her dedication inspires peers and preserves cultural heritage. Zola actively volunteers in community service initiatives, demonstrating compassion, empathy and a strong sense of social responsibility. Her selflessness has positively impacted our community. As an active member of New Gospel Baptist Church, Zola embodies Christian values, participating in choir, youth groups and community outreach programs. Zola possesses natural leadership qualities, guiding peers through dance workshops and community projects. Her confidence, humility and kindness make her an exceptional role model.”

What’s your favorite subject in school? Math
What do you want to be when you grow up? I aspire to become a successful professional dancer and entrepreneur.
Do you have any hobbies? What do you like to do for fun? My hobbies include dancing, crafting and enjoying quality time with loved ones, such as hanging out with friends and family, especially my older sister and brother, as well as listening to music.
What are you really good at doing? I’m super good at dancing, tumbling, singing and painting! I also make friends really easily and love meeting new people!
What’s your favorite thing about yourself? I love everything about myself! I’m not perfect, but that’s okay. I’m really good at lots of things and that makes me happy!
Who is your role model? My big sister and mom are my role models. I want to be like them when I grow up!
If you could meet any famous person, who would it be and why? I want to meet Beyoncé and Alicia Keys! Beyoncé is really supportive of her daughter like my mom is with me. And I love Alicia Keys’ music!
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why? I want to visit Jamaica because I’ve had lots of Jamaican teachers and I think their culture is really cool! I want to see it for myself!
If you could have any superpower, what would it be and how would you use it? If I could, I’d want to fly anytime! It would be so cool to travel the world super fast without needing a passport, waiting in lines, or sitting in traffic!
What’s your favorite movie or TV show? My favorite movie is “Madea’s Family Reunion” and my favorite TV shows are “Bring It!” and “SpongeBob.”
If you could eat one thing every day, what would it be? Honestly, if I could eat one thing every day, it would be Chick-fil-A. I’m obsessed!

We’re beyond thrilled to celebrate our incredible daughter, Zola! As captain of the Enchanted Roses dance team, she’s a talented dancer who lights up the stage. Her voice also shines as a gifted singer in her school choir. But what’s even more inspiring? Zola has defied doctor’s odds and proven that with determination and heart, anything is possible! With her kind spirit, love for learning and contagious enthusiasm, Zola spreads joy everywhere she goes!
