Fayetteville Future Black History Makers: Meet Lyrik Manuel

Lyrik Shaunice Manuel, 13, the daughter of Psoma McMillan and Shaun and Taccarra Manuel and great-granddaughter of Ethlyn Holden Baker, is in seventh grade at Gray’s Creek Middle School.

She/he was nominated as a Fayetteville Observer Future Black History Maker because “Lyrik’s participation in the school chorus, her desire/try-out to be on the school’s basketball team, her future plans to become involved in various team sports and her involvement in church activities are evidences of her leadership and teamwork abilities,” writes her great-grandmother, Ethelyn Holden Baker, who nominated her. “Because of her loving and pleasing personality, she is well-liked and accepted by all who know her. The kindness she displays, her willingness to volunteer for various church activities and the compassionate connection she has with toddlers and young children have inspired parents to ask her to ‘baby-sit’. Lyrik is proud that her father is the grand-nephew of a direct descendant of William Lomack, a free Black man, who fought in the American Revolutionary War in the 1770s. As one who loves reading and works hard to reach academic excellence, Lyrik has displayed a scientific mind since early childhood. Her empathy and her interest in science indicate that she has a desire to follow in her mother’s footsteps into the field of health care.”
