Fayetteville Future Black History Makers: Meet Paris Matthews
Paris Matthews, 9, daughter of Milton Matthews Jr. and Keosha Matthews, is in fourth grade at Ashley Elementary School.
She was nominated as a Fayetteville Observer Future Black History Maker because she “is an exceptional young leader in her school and community,” writes her nominator, Principal Sherrill Haley. “As a fourth grader at Ashley Elementary, Paris is already making a lasting impact through her dedication to academics and leadership roles. She participates in the Academically or Intellectually Gifted (AIG) program, where she challenges herself with advanced coursework, and she is also a proud member of her school’s Battle of the Books team. Her commitment to academic excellence and intellectual growth has made her a role model among her peers and a trusted ambassador within her classroom. In this role, she assists new classmates in getting settled and supports others with assignments, showcasing her kindness and maturity. Beyond academics, Paris shines in the arts and in service to her community. She actively participates in her church, volunteering with Children’s Church and lending her voice to the Tiny Tots Choir, where she helps guide younger children in their musical expressions. Paris’ love for service extends to her involvement with the Girl Scouts, where she develops life skills, learns the value of teamwork, and contributes to community service projects alongside her troop. Her ability to balance her commitments to school, church, and the Girl Scouts highlights her dedication to helping others and building a strong foundation of character.”

What’s your favorite subject in school? Art is my favorite subject in school.
What do you want to be when you grow up? When I grow up I want to be a painter/artist.
Do you have any hobbies? What do you like to do for fun? My hobbies are braiding my dolls’ hair, drawing, coloring, cooking and doing crafts.
What are you really good at doing? I’m really good at art.
What’s your favorite thing about yourself? My favorite thing about myself is my unique personality.
Who is your role model? My role model is my grandmother, Shirley Matthews.
If you could meet any famous person, who would it be and why? I would want to meet Rosa Parks because she inspires me to fight for your rights and no matter what happens you can still get through it.
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why? I would go to Paris because I want to see the art there and explore the culture.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be and how would you use it? I would stop violence in the world both physical and emotional.
What’s your favorite movie or TV show? My favorite TV show is “Henry Danger.”
If you could eat one thing every day, what would it be? I would eat macaroni and cheese every day.

Why are you proud of your child? We are proud of Paris because she continues to be a caring model student who enjoys helping others and learning new things. She is creative and helpful. She makes a special point to be kind to those who are not always treated fairly.
